Reading about fat dissolving injections Korea side effects because you're afraid of a lump or an uneven smile showing up after you've flown home?
Read this before you lock in the Seoul part of your trip.
Hello, I'm Sarang Lim, M.D., Head Doctor.
You'll know which reactions usually settle by themselves, which ones need a doctor, what decides the cost, how long recovery takes and how many trip days to keep open. Then you can judge whether this fits your body and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Sarang Lim, Head Doctor at Muse Clinic Myeongdong.
I plan and perform treatment one-to-one after a structured consultation. English, Japanese and Chinese interpreters are in the clinic, and someone stays with you from consultation through treatment. Foreign patients pay from the same price list as Korean locals.
I'm writing this because people often book this injection like a facial on the last day of a trip, when its reactions can run for days or weeks.
Most fat dissolving injections side effects are local and temporary: stinging, swelling, redness, bruising and firm lumps under the skin. The rare ones, such as nerve weakness, skin ulcers and infection, are why your flight date matters as much as the injection.
If one area is on your mind, send a photo of it on WhatsApp with your travel dates, and ask the question that's worrying you most.
Which fat dissolving injections Korea side effects are normal, and for how long?
The clearest day-by-day numbers I can point you to come from a published series of 1,269 patients treated with a phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholate combination. It's one group, one formula and one team's technique, so read these as a rough map.
| Reaction | Usual course in that series | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Stinging | Almost everyone, for the first few hours | Most people felt relief by the end of the day |
| Swelling | About 24 to 48 hours | Keep those two days light; the authors used pressure garments |
| Redness | A day or two, more visible on fair skin | Plan photos and dinners around it |
| Firm lumps | More than half of cases, about 3 to 4 weeks | You may carry them home |
| Loose stools, nausea, headache | Within 24 hours, gone in 2 to 3 days | Reported mainly at high total doses |
Bruising isn't listed in that series, but it is common in other research. In trials of deoxycholic acid under the chin, bruising and hematoma together were reported in 72% of patients. Tell your doctor about any blood thinner, because it raises the odds.
Why the swelling is part of how it works
In short, these injections generally work by damaging fat cell membranes, and the body then clears the debris through inflammation. So some soreness and swelling is the treatment doing what it was designed to do. That's the piece many people miss when they picture a quick cosmetic appointment with nothing to show afterward.
It also explains why the formula matters so much. "Fat dissolving injection" is a loose label covering different ingredients, doses and depths. Deoxycholic acid on its own has US FDA approval only for fat under the chin, and the FDA recommends against other uses, citing reports of nerve and muscle problems outside that area. Combinations with phosphatidylcholine are used off-label, and the review above notes that dosing and technique haven't been standardized.
Our contour injection menu includes names such as New Acu Injection, V Injection and GPC Injection. Whichever name you see, at any clinic, ask the same thing: what are the active ingredients, and what amount goes into my area?
Genuine product and correct dosage come first for me, and I'd rather you hold me to that with direct questions. A menu name tells you very little about what your body will react to. The ingredient list and the amount tell you far more, so ask about them before you agree to anything.

What can go wrong, and how rare is it?
The rarer problems are mostly tied to where the needle ends up and how much goes in. Much of the detailed data comes from deoxycholic acid under the chin and along the jaw, so it won't transfer exactly to every formula or body area.

Risks and side effects to know
Nerve weakness near the mouth. A nerve running along the jaw can be affected, which shows up as an uneven smile. In the main trial data it occurred in 4% of treated patients, with resolution taking from 1 to 298 days and a median of 44. That's long enough to matter even when it resolves.
Lumps that don't settle. The FDA reviewed 117 reports of unresolved nodules or masses, present for a mean of 143 days when reported. It says these may need medical treatment.
Skin damage. Injecting too close to the surface can cause an ulcer. Most reports healed, though some case reports describe scarring that stayed. Blood vessel injury is rarer and shows as blanching, dusky skin and pain.
Infection and hair loss. An abscess has been reported, and it needed drainage and antibiotics. Temporary hair loss at the site is reported mainly in men, usually lasting 6 weeks to 12 months.
Results vary from person to person, and so does how long any reaction lasts.
Who should wait or skip it. In general medicine, these are reasons to pause and talk it through:
- Infection, acne pustules or irritated skin at the site
- Blood thinners, a bleeding problem or uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Egg or soy allergy, which matters for phosphatidylcholine formulas
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- A weakened immune system, or untreated thyroid or hormone problems
- Fullness under the chin that may not be fat, such as a thyroid or lymph node issue
If something appears after you fly home. See a doctor promptly for an uneven smile, facial weakness, trouble swallowing, spreading redness, fever, or skin turning dusky or breaking down. Show them the ingredient name and the area treated. The CDC's medical tourism guidance also warns that follow-up care for complications may not be covered by insurance, so check your policy before you travel.
If I could ask you only one thing before injecting, it would be the date of your flight. A reaction I can look at in Seoul is a different problem from one you're photographing alone at home two days later. A tight schedule is a sound medical reason to move the injection or leave it for another trip.
Before you decide, write down your regular medications and any egg or soy allergy, send that list on WhatsApp, and ask whether either one matters for the injection you have in mind.
How long is recovery from fat dissolving injections?
A typical course looks like stages, with the lumps as the slow part:
- 01Hours after: stinging, usually easing by evening.
- 02Days 1 and 2: swelling and redness, then bruises that may show more as swelling drops.
- 03Weeks 1 to 4: firm, tender spots you can feel more than see, slowly softening.
- 04Week 4 onward: the point where it's usually reasonable to judge the session. Trials assessed patients at least 30 days after each one.
The advice on massage conflicts, and that's worth knowing. The lipolysis series recommends massage for lumps, while the deoxycholic acid review says not to massage after injecting because it may move the product. Ask which applies to the formula you're getting, and don't take advice written for a different one.
You may also find day-by-day recovery pictures online. Many show a different procedure altogether, so they won't tell you much about this one. The same goes if you're adding something else to the trip. Our notes on glass skin treatment side effects and the glutathione injection visit plan cover those separately, and each one adds its own reactions to your schedule.
How many trip days should you keep open?
There's no fixed number, but the 24 to 48 hour swelling window gives you a place to start. I'd want you in Seoul for at least two full days after the injection, and longer if your schedule allows. That's my own reasoning from the data above, so confirm it for your formula and area.
Say you land on a Thursday, you fly out the following Tuesday, and you want the area under your chin treated. I'd aim for the Friday, or Saturday at the latest. Weekday hours run 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM and weekends 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, so either works. You'd spend the swelling days in Seoul, and any odd reaction would surface while you can still walk in. You would probably fly home with firm spots still there, and I'd tell you to expect that.
Now say you land on Saturday and leave Monday morning. I'd suggest leaving this injection for another trip, because you'd be on the plane during the window when swelling is usually most noticeable.
Then there's the question of sessions. The published series averaged four sessions at least four weeks apart, so one short trip is unlikely to be a full course. If you live in Asia, a few return visits may be realistic. If you don't, weigh that now. Our guide to sessions and pricing in Korea goes further into that planning.
Pack as the CDC suggests: copies of your medical records, recent test results and a list of medications. Before you leave Seoul, ask for the name of what was injected and photograph it, because a doctor at home will want to know.
What decides the cost of fat dissolving injections?
For you, the total usually comes down to five things:
- The formula: different menu items use different products.
- The area and amount: a small area under the chin needs far less than a larger body area.
- The number of sessions: this often moves the total more than the price of one visit.
- VAT: menu prices are published on our site, with VAT added separately.
- Your trip: extra nights in Seoul, or a return flight for later sessions, belong in your budget too.
Foreign patients pay the same prices as locals, with no markup. If the face is your main concern, how cost works for the face and chin breaks it down by area.
To get a figure for your own case, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost, naming the area and how many sessions you could realistically fit in.
When I'd tell you to skip it this trip
Put simply, these injections generally suit small, soft pockets of fat you can pinch, in someone whose weight is fairly stable. They aren't a weight loss method. If the area is mostly loose skin, dissolving fat beneath it may leave you less happy with the result, and that calls for a different conversation.
I'd also hold off if you need the area to look its usual self within a few days, such as for a wedding or a work event right after you land. The same goes if your budget covers one session and you're expecting the change of a full course. One session may do less than you're hoping for, and it's better to know that before you spend the money. The details for your own body are worked out at the consultation.
One photo of the area is enough for a first message on WhatsApp, and you can ask before booking anything. Send it with one question, for example whether your flight date leaves enough room. When you come to Myeongdong, an interpreter stays with you from consultation through treatment, and I'll examine the area and recommend what fits you.
Questions people ask
Before you message us
Are fat dissolving injections Korea side effects different from side effects at home?
The reactions are tied to the ingredients, the dose, the injection depth and your own body, and the country doesn't change the biology. What travel changes is your access to the person who treated you once you've left. That's why timing and your plan for care at home deserve attention before you book, along with a clear record of what was injected.
Can a lump from a fat dissolving injection stay for months?
Most firm spots soften within weeks, and the published series reports about three to four weeks. Some last longer. The FDA has reviewed reports of nodules still present after months, and it says they may need medical treatment. If a lump is growing, painful or still firm after several weeks, have a doctor examine it instead of waiting.
Do fat dissolving injections cause nausea or diarrhea?
They can with phosphatidylcholine formulas. One published series describes diarrhea, malaise, headache and nausea appearing mainly within 24 hours and clearing in two to three days, reported mainly when the total dose was high. It's a good reason to ask how much product is planned, especially if several areas are being treated in one sitting.
Does the fat come back after these injections?
Fat cells that are destroyed generally don't return, but the fat cells that remain can still grow if your weight goes up. So a stable weight matters for keeping the change. Results vary, and no injection can promise a set duration. Some people also decide they want further sessions once the first round has fully settled.
Will the risks be explained to me in English at Muse Clinic Myeongdong?
Yes. English, Japanese and Chinese interpreters are in the clinic, other languages can be arranged on request, and someone stays with you from consultation through treatment. Use that time to ask about the ingredients, the amount planned for your area, what to expect on your flight day and what you should do if a reaction appears at home.
Results and maintenance period vary by individual. Every procedure carries the possibility of side effects, which are explained before you agree to treatment. Prices exclude 10% VAT and event prices may change. This article is general information from the clinic and is not a diagnosis; suitability is decided at the consultation.
