How long does chin filler take, from the first needle to the day you can sit through a long flight home without thinking about your chin?
Read this before you lock in your flight dates.
Hello, I'm Sarang Lim, M.D., Head Doctor.
By the end you'll know what decides the cost, what reviews get right and wrong, which methods suit a chin, and how many swollen days to expect. Then you can choose a plan that fits your face, your leave and your budget.
Hello, I'm Dr. Sarang Lim, Head Doctor at Muse Clinic Myeongdong.
A few facts about us matter for this question. The Juvéderm filler on our menu can be used anywhere except the nose, forehead and under-eye area, so the chin is included, and I'm a Juvéderm advisory doctor. English, Japanese and Chinese interpreters are in the clinic, and someone stays with you from consultation through treatment. We're open Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 3 PM, a one-minute walk from Myeongdong Station Exit 5.
I'm writing this because most people plan their trip around the minutes in the chair and forget the two or three puffy days that decide whether the trip feels easy.
The injecting itself usually takes minutes, and with the consultation, numbing and marking, the visit fits inside a morning or an afternoon. Swelling is usually most visible for the first two to three days and largely settled within one to two weeks, so I'd book treatment at least two or three days before your flight home.
If you already have dates, send a side-profile photo of your chin taken in daylight on WhatsApp, along with the one question that's holding you back.
How long does chin filler take in the chair?
The needle work is the short part. A filler visit usually moves through four stages: a consultation, numbing, marking the design on your skin, and the injections. For a chin, the injections are often over before people have finished bracing for them.
The consultation comes first for a reason. A chin is judged in profile, against your nose and lips, and the amount of projection that suits one face looks heavy on another. At our clinic a structured consultation with an interpreter comes first, and then I plan and perform the treatment one-to-one.
Numbing is usually a cream that sits on the skin for a while, and many hyaluronic acid fillers also contain a local anesthetic mixed into the gel. That's why most people describe pressure and a dull ache along the jaw more than sharp pain. Plan for the visit to take most of a morning or afternoon, and confirm the time when you book.
The amount matters more than the minutes. A chin that needs a little forward projection and a chin that needs length, projection and width are two different plans. The second takes more gel, and for some faces it's wiser to build it over two visits than to place all of it at once.
Swelling, bruising and tenderness, day by day
Here is the usual course for hyaluronic acid filler in the chin. These are general patterns, and your own skin can move faster or slower.
| When | What you'll usually notice | What it means for your plans |
|---|---|---|
| Treatment day | Firmness, mild swelling, small marks where the needle went in | Dinner out is fine; skip alcohol and hard exercise |
| Days 1 to 3 | Swelling at its most visible; tender when you chew or press | Photos look fuller than the final shape |
| Days 4 to 7 | Swelling easing; any bruise turning yellow | Most people feel fine for work and meetings |
| Weeks 1 to 2 | The gel settles into the tissue | This is the shape to judge |
Bruising mostly comes down to whether the needle crosses a small vessel, which nobody can fully predict. Blood-thinning medicines, fish oil supplements and alcohol the night before make it more likely. Don't stop anything a doctor prescribed for you; mention it in your first message instead.
For the first night or two, sleep on your back with your head a little raised, and avoid pressing on or massaging the chin unless you were told to. Saunas, hot yoga and hard workouts can wait a couple of days, since heat and exertion tend to keep swelling up.

When can you fly after chin filler?
Cabin pressure isn't the main concern with filler. I want a gap between treatment and the flight because the first day or two is when an early problem would show itself: pain that gets worse instead of better, or a patch of skin that turns pale or dusky. I'd rather you noticed that in Seoul than halfway across the Pacific.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises medical travelers to allow time to recover before the trip home and to carry copies of their treatment records. For chin filler, that means two or three days between treatment and departure, and a note of the product and amount used.
Say you land in Seoul on Thursday night and fly home Monday afternoon. A Friday treatment gives you Saturday and Sunday to watch the swelling peak and start to ease, and the clinic is open until 3 PM on both weekend days. If your flight leaves on Saturday instead, I'd suggest a smaller amount this trip, or waiting for a longer one, rather than squeezing a full plan into a single day.
If you were told at home that your chin needs a lot of volume, the same logic applies more strongly. A bigger change means more swelling and more to judge once it settles, so splitting the plan over two trips usually means fewer surprises on the flight and a clearer view of the shape.
I would rather place less filler on a short trip and see you again than place everything the day before you fly. A chin that can still be adjusted later is worth more than a few extra millimeters this week. I decide the amount with you, looking at your profile, your nose and your lips together.
Once your dates are fixed, add your flight times and whether you've had filler in the chin before, and ask on WhatsApp which day of your stay leaves the most room before departure.
Which methods suit a chin?
Most chin filler is hyaluronic acid, a gel that holds water and gives shape where it's placed. Our menu lists Juvéderm, which can be used for the chin. Hyaluronic acid has one practical advantage for travelers: if it ever needs to come out, an enzyme can dissolve it. That's a reason I lean toward it for a first chin on a short trip.
Our filler menu also includes Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) and Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid). They behave differently from hyaluronic acid. Radiesse adds firmer volume, and Sculptra works gradually over several sessions as your own collagen builds. Neither dissolves the way hyaluronic acid does, so they suit someone who already knows the shape they want.
A dimpled, puckered chin is a different problem. That texture comes from an overactive chin muscle, and our anti-wrinkle injection menu includes the chin for it. The effect lasts about 3 months. Some people need both: a muscle-relaxing injection for the dimpling and filler for the shape.
Two of our policies are worth knowing before you choose. We use genuine product in the correct dosage, and we don't do filler retouching; any amount left over is discarded rather than saved. How long the gel stays in your chin varies with the product and how quickly your body breaks hyaluronic acid down. I've written separately about how long Juvéderm usually lasts and when touch-ups come up.
Do chin filler reviews get the downtime right?
Review threads about chin filler repeat a handful of claims. Some hold up and some don't.
'It's a lunch-break treatment.' True for the needle time. What the posts skip is the next two or three days, when the chin can look fuller and longer than the final shape. Photos taken then are the ones that worry people.
'Chin filler always migrates.' That isn't the usual pattern. When filler spreads or sits where it shouldn't, it tends to be linked to the amount, the depth and the product more than to the chin itself, and a lump in the first week is often swelling that settles.
'You can fly that evening.' Many people do without trouble. I still leave a gap because of the early-warning window described above, and the plane has little to do with it.
'It dissolves, so nothing can really go wrong.' Dissolving is an option, but a filler that blocks a blood vessel needs treatment within hours. Being reversible doesn't remove that risk. It gives a doctor a tool to deal with it.
Risks and side effects to know
Most of what follows chin filler is temporary: swelling, tenderness when you chew or press, small bruises, redness at the injection points and a firm feeling under the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology describes these as common and usually short-lived, and for most people they fade over days to a couple of weeks.
The rare problem I take most seriously is filler entering a blood vessel. The US Food and Drug Administration warns that this can block blood flow and damage the skin, and in rare cases affect vision or cause a stroke. Delayed lumps and infection are less common still.
Many doctors would ask you to wait if any of these apply:
- an active pimple, rash, cold sore or infection on or near the chin
- pregnancy or breastfeeding
- a known allergy to hyaluronic acid fillers or local anesthetics
- dental work planned in the next couple of weeks, or a tooth infection right now
- blood-thinning medication you can't safely pause, which you should raise before treatment
If, after you fly home, the pain keeps getting worse, the skin turns white, grey or blotchy, or your vision changes, go to an emergency department straight away and show them the product name and amount from your records. Then message us on WhatsApp as well. Results vary from person to person, and so does how long the filler stays.
What decides the cost of chin filler
The estimate on our site is a reference; the final plan and price are set with me at your consultation, because no figure means much before I've seen your profile. These are the things that move it:
- The product. Juvéderm and the other fillers on our menu are priced separately.
- The amount. The number of cc's is usually the biggest factor, and a chin that needs length as well as projection takes more.
- Other areas on the same day. Many people pair the chin with lips; our posts on lip filler shapes and swelling and how lip filler is priced in Korea cover that side.
- A muscle-relaxing injection for a dimpled chin, if you need one.
- Your trip. One full session, or the plan split over two visits.
Foreign visitors pay the same listed prices as Korean patients, and our listed prices exclude VAT. The whole menu is set out in our Korean filler price list for Seoul.
To get a figure for your own chin, ask on WhatsApp what it would cost for your case, and say whether you're thinking of the chin alone or the chin with lips.
How many days in Seoul should you plan?
For chin filler alone, I'd plan the treatment day plus at least two or three full days before departure. If you have five days or more, book the treatment early in the trip. That way the puffiest days fall while you're still close to the clinic, and the shape has started to settle by the time you leave.
On weekdays we're open from 10 AM to 8 PM, so an evening visit after a day of sightseeing is possible; Saturdays and Sundays run from 9 AM to 3 PM. Use those hours as the frame and pick the day that leaves the longest gap before your flight.
A single side-profile photo in daylight is enough to start, and you can ask your questions on WhatsApp before booking anything. Send it with your dates and the one question you most want answered, such as how many days your chin needs before the flight. When you come in, I'll look at your chin in profile with you and recommend the product and amount that fit your face.
Questions people ask
Before you message us
Does chin filler hurt?
Most people describe pressure and a dull ache along the jaw more than sharp pain. Numbing cream is usually applied first, and many hyaluronic acid fillers contain a local anesthetic in the gel. The chin often feels sore when you chew or press it for a day or two afterwards, which is normal and usually eases on its own.
How long does chin filler take to settle into its final shape?
Swelling is usually most visible for the first two to three days, and the gel generally settles into the tissue over one to two weeks. Judge the shape at around two weeks rather than in the mirror the next morning. If one side still looks noticeably different after that point, mention it on WhatsApp with a photo.
Can I wear makeup and go out the same day?
Going out for dinner is usually fine, though skipping alcohol that evening helps keep swelling and bruising down. Many doctors suggest leaving makeup off the injection points until the next day so the tiny needle marks can close. Avoid pressing or rubbing the chin while you apply it.
Can I add lip filler on the same visit?
Many people do combine the chin and lips, since both are judged in profile together. Expect more swelling around the mouth for the first couple of days. For lip filler, the usual advice is to wait two to three hours before eating. Adding lips also changes the amount of product and therefore the cost.
What should I bring to the consultation?
Bring a list of any medicines and supplements you take, especially blood thinners or fish oil, and the name and date of any filler you've had in the chin before. Your flight times help too, so the treatment day can leave enough buffer before you fly home.
Results and maintenance period vary by individual. Every procedure carries the possibility of side effects, which are explained before you agree to treatment. Prices exclude 10% VAT and event prices may change. This article is general information from the clinic and is not a diagnosis; suitability is decided at the consultation.
