Korean Lip Filler Technique, in Numbers

Korean lip filler technique explained by a Seoul doctor: why it starts at 1cc, why the mouth corners matter, real risks, and what to send before you book.

"Will it look overdone?" sits behind most searches for the Korean lip filler technique. The lip filler option on our menu in Myeongdong is listed as 1cc, and that small number explains a lot: the style usually aims for shape before size, with hyaluronic acid filler placed to define the outline and support the mouth corners, so the corners sit level or a little higher at rest instead of the lips simply getting bigger.

If you've read threads for weeks and still haven't seen the phrase defined, below are the numbers behind it, what each one means for your own lips, and where the risks sit.

What do people mean by the Korean lip filler technique?

Usually three things: a small volume, close attention to the outline and the corners, and a design agreed before the needle goes in. The look most people describe is a mouth where both sides match and the corners don't turn down, not a projected lip you notice from across the room.

There is no registered "Korean" injection method. The phrase describes a set of priorities. Our menu sums them up as "the golden ratio of lips": the proportion between upper and lower lip, and between the lips and the rest of the face. That proportion is judged on your face, in person, with your teeth, chin and smile in view. A screenshot of someone else's lips can tell me what you like; it can't tell me how that shape will sit on you.

The gradient look you see in Korean lip tints points the same way. It's a mouth that is defined at the center and soft at the edges, which is roughly what this style of filler design is trying to support.

Why the starting number is 1cc

Because 1cc is often enough to adjust outline and symmetry while leaving room to add more on a later visit. It is also the unit our lip filler option is listed in, so it's the number you'll see first.

Hyaluronic acid draws water into the tissue, and the lips swell after any injection. For the first few days the lips usually look fuller than they will once things settle. That is one reason a first session is better judged after the swelling has gone down than in the mirror the same afternoon.

One clinic policy is relevant here. As our menu puts it: no filler retouching at our clinic, and any remaining amount will be discarded. Plan the amount with that in mind.

The numbers on our treatment page look like this:

The mouth corners are half the design

Corners that turn down at rest can make even full lips look tired, which is why the Korean approach so often treats the corners together with the lip itself. Our menu lists mouth-corner toxin and lip filler together as one treatment.

A small muscle below each corner of the mouth pulls the corners downward. A small dose of botulinum toxin can relax that pull, and a little filler at the corner can support it from below. We use Korean-made botulinum toxin for this. You can read how the two are combined on the mouth corner lift and lip filler treatment page, and the Korean smile lift article goes through the corner treatment on its own.

The "lip flip" you see on social media is a different idea: toxin placed into the upper lip muscle so the lip rolls outward slightly. It isn't a separate item on our menu.

Which part of the design gets the attention depends on what is bothering you. Our treatment page lists four concerns: uneven lips, thin lips, drooping corners, and wanting fuller lips with a natural corner angle. With uneven lips, filler usually goes where it brings the two sides closer. With thin lips, it goes into the body of the lip, often within that first 1cc. Drooping corners point to corner toxin, with or without filler at the corners, and the last group usually needs lip filler and corner treatment together.

Fine vertical lines on and above the lips are a separate question. A small amount of filler placed close to the surface can soften some of them, but deeper lines from years of pursing or smoking often improve only partly, and filler alone may not be the right tool. Whether yours respond is judged by looking at them with your mouth still and moving.

My view: a reference photo helps, but another person's lips rarely transfer cleanly to your face. The amount of upper lip that shows when you talk, where the corners sit when your face is still, and the shape of your chin all change what "natural" means for you. I would rather a first session look a little understated than leave you living with a shape you didn't want while it slowly fades.

How the 10 minutes in the chair are spent

The injecting itself takes about 10 minutes. Before that come a 1:1 consultation, anesthetic cream, and the design step, where the plan is marked and agreed.

If you don't speak Korean, this is the part people worry about most: explaining a shape in a second language. English, Japanese and Chinese interpreters are in the clinic, and someone stays with you from consultation through treatment. Other languages can be arranged on request.

On pain: anesthetic cream goes on first, and the filler itself contains an anesthetic, so it is usually less painful than an injection without numbing. Less painful is not the same as nothing; expect pressure and some stinging at the corners. After treatment you can start eating again in 2 to 3 hours.

Lip filler risks and side effects: what can go wrong?

Swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness in the first days are common. Lumps and allergic-type reactions are less common. Injection into a blood vessel is rare but serious, and it is the one complication everyone getting lip filler should be able to recognize.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's page on dermal fillers lists the common effects (bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, itching, rash) and the rare ones, including lumps, infection, and filler accidentally injected into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin and, rarely, affect vision.

A blocked vessel, often called vascular occlusion, tends to show up as pain that is out of proportion, skin that turns pale or dusky, or a mottled patch near the injection site. It needs attention the same day. If you notice those signs after any filler, in Seoul or at home, contact the treating clinic immediately and go to emergency care if you can't reach them.

Small firm bumps (nodules) can appear when filler collects in one spot. Many settle; some need treatment. A lip that bruises purple for a week is usually a bruise, not a complication, but it is worth showing the doctor a photo if you're unsure.

Lip filler is commonly postponed if you have an active cold sore or infection on the lips, if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you've reacted to a filler before. The American Academy of Dermatology advises having fillers done by a qualified doctor who knows facial anatomy, and telling them about your medical history and medications first.

How long the result lasts, and how your lips swell, varies from person to person. The speed at which your body breaks down hyaluronic acid differs, and so do the products.

Lip plumpers, tints and lip tattoos are a different category

A lot of searches next to "Korean lip filler" are really about cosmetics: glosses, tints, stains and plumpers. They sit on the surface; filler is a medical device injected into the lip.

Topical plumpers mostly work by mildly irritating the lip so it swells for a short while, as WebMD's overview of lip plumpers explains. That can be a reasonable way to test whether you like a fuller look before deciding on anything injected.

A small single-site trial published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in 2018 evaluated the duration, efficacy and safety of one lip plumper, so topical products have their own evidence, separate from injected filler. Lip blush and lip tattooing are pigment work, not volume, and they aren't on our menu.

Fitting lip filler into a Seoul trip

Book it early in the trip, not on the last afternoon. Swelling usually settles over the following days, and you want to still be in Seoul if something feels wrong.

We're on the third floor of Korea Daeyungak Tower, a 1-minute walk from Myeongdong Station Exit 5 (Line 4). We're open weekdays 10am–8pm and weekends 9am–3pm, so a weekend morning works if your weekdays are full. The CDC's medical tourism page is worth a read before any treatment abroad, mainly for its advice on planning follow-up care once you're home.

If you're thinking about other areas of the face too, the facial balancing article explains how lips fit into the wider plan, and our clinic's main page lists every treatment area.

If you have a photoshoot or a wedding coming up, leave a buffer of several days between treatment and the event.

What to send before you book

Three things make the first conversation more useful: a photo of your lips relaxed and without lipstick (front and side), one photo smiling, and a note of any filler you've had before, with roughly when and where on the lips.

If you're not sure the Korean style suits your face, that's a good reason to ask before booking, not after. Send those photos and your travel dates on WhatsApp so the consultation in Myeongdong starts from your lips rather than from someone else's.

Questions people ask

Before you message us

How long does Korean-style lip filler last?

It depends on the person and the product. Hyaluronic acid is broken down by the body at different speeds in different people, and filler products differ too, so there is no single number that applies to everyone. Lips also move constantly, which affects how filler settles. Your doctor can explain what to expect for the specific product used in your lips.

Does the Korean lip filler technique hurt?

Anesthetic cream is applied before treatment, and the filler itself contains an anesthetic, so it is usually less painful. It can still hurt a little: expect pressure and some stinging, especially near the mouth corners. The injecting part takes about 10 minutes, after the consultation, numbing and design steps.

When can I eat after lip filler?

You can start eating again 2 to 3 hours after lip filler. Swelling is common in the first days, so softer food and avoiding pressing on the lips can feel more comfortable. If you are planning a dinner reservation in Seoul, book it for the evening rather than right after your appointment.

Can mouth-corner toxin and lip filler be done on the same day?

Our menu lists mouth-corner toxin and lip filler together as one treatment. Whether both suit you, and in what amounts, is decided by the doctor at your consultation after looking at your lips at rest and when you smile.

Is a lip flip the same as Korean lip filler?

No. A lip flip places botulinum toxin into the upper lip muscle so the lip rolls slightly outward, and it adds no volume. Korean-style lip filler uses hyaluronic acid filler to shape the lip and, often, works together with treatment at the mouth corners. A lip flip is not a separate item on our menu.

Results and maintenance period vary by individual. Every procedure carries the possibility of side effects, which are explained before you agree to treatment. Prices exclude 10% VAT and event prices may change. This article is general information from the clinic and is not a diagnosis; suitability is decided at the consultation.
