Wondering whether a Korean treatment for acne scars is worth planning a trip around, and how many days your skin will look treated?

It's worth reading on before you book flights or a session.

Hello, I'm Sarang Lim, M.D., Head Doctor.

After reading you will know which scar types suit which methods, what the price depends on, what review threads claim versus what is medically true, and how many days to plan in Seoul.

Hello, I'm Dr. Sarang Lim, Head Doctor at Muse Clinic Myeongdong.

The clinic is a one-minute walk from Myeongdong Station Exit 5, open until 8 PM on weekdays and 9 AM to 3 PM on weekends, and our laser center is Cynosure certified. That makes it easier to fit treatment into a short trip.

Most people assume one device and one visit will smooth every scar, and that the treatment day is the part that takes time.

In practice, treatment usually combines subcision with fractional radiofrequency or laser over several sessions, and the days that follow decide your schedule.

Which acne scars respond to which treatment?

Not all dents are the same scar, and the type decides the plan. The American Academy of Dermatology lists a range of options for depressed scars, from scar surgery that lifts the scar to lasers, microneedling and radiofrequency, and notes that dermatologists often combine several.

Scar typeWhat it looks likeTypically considered
RollingSoft waves, most visible in side lightSubcision to release the tether, then resurfacing
BoxcarFlat-bottomed dents with sharp edgesFractional RF microneedling or laser
Ice pickNarrow, deep pinpointsTargeted techniques; often the slowest to change
Red or brown marksFlat discoloration after a breakoutSun protection, time, sometimes toning lasers

Risks and side effects to know

The last row matters more than it looks. Flat red or brown marks aren't true scars, and they often fade on their own over months. I'd rather you know that before you plan a trip around them.

Among the acne and pore treatments on our menu you'll find Air subcision, Potenza and Venus Viva. Both create a grid of controlled micro-injuries that the skin heals with new collagen, and that healing is exactly what you're scheduling your trip around.

Active breakouts come first. The AAD advises getting acne under control before scar treatment begins, because new inflamed spots keep creating new marks. If that's where you are now, my notes on what Korean acne treatment involves at a Seoul clinic are the better place to start.

Recovery day by day after a scar session

The timeline below is general medicine for fractional RF and subcision, not a promise for your skin. Thicker, oilier skin and lighter settings tend to settle faster; deeper work and subcision add days.

The day of treatment

Numbing cream is commonly used before fractional RF, and the session itself feels like heat and prickling. Afterwards the skin looks and feels sunburned: red, warm, a little tight. Where scars were released with subcision, expect swelling and tenderness by evening. Plan a quiet dinner, not a night out.

Days 1 and 2

Redness usually starts to fade, and up close you may see a faint grid of tiny dots. The AAD's guidance after microneedling is that most people can return to work or school right away and should wait 24 hours before applying makeup. Subcision bruises are often at their most visible around now.

Days 3 to 5

The grid marks dry and flake, and the skin can feel rough to the touch. With light makeup, many people are comfortable on a video call by this point. On lighter skin redness fades; on darker skin the treated area can look temporarily darker, which the AAD also describes as usually fading within a few days to a week.

Days 6 to 14

The surface has mostly settled after fractional RF alone. Subcision bruising can take up to about two weeks to clear completely in some people, especially along the jaw and lower cheeks.

Weeks 4 to 12

This is when the actual change happens. Collagen rebuilds slowly, so improvement tends to appear over a few weeks, with full results taking several months. Judging a session the week after is a little like judging a garden the day after planting.

How many days should the trip be?

Most of what I'd plan for a Korean treatment for acne scars on fixed leave comes down to one gap: the days between your last session and your flight. For fractional RF on its own, a stay of about a week with treatment on day one or two usually gives the surface time to settle. If subcision is part of the plan, either allow closer to two weeks or accept that you may fly home with fading bruises under concealer.

Dry cabin air, sun at the window seat and touching your face are the things to manage, so pack a plain moisturizer and a high-SPF sunscreen in your carry-on.

Here's how an eight-day trip could look. You land on a Friday evening. Saturday morning you come in during weekend hours for the consultation; ask when you book whether treatment can follow on the same day. Sunday you stay low-key indoors. Monday to Wednesday you sightsee in a hat, skip the jjimjilbang and hard workouts, and reapply sunscreen. By Thursday the surface is mostly calm, and you fly the following Saturday with a few days of margin.

The harder truth is the number of sessions. A single trip covers one of those. If you can come back to Seoul every month or two, the course can follow your trips; if not, one session shows how your skin responds, and the rest is a conversation about what you can continue at home.

When your leave is fixed, the number I care about isn't how many sessions we could squeeze in. It's how many days your skin gets between the last session and the flight. I'd rather do one well-spaced session and have you leave with skin that has calmed down than stack treatments into a week and send you through an airport with raw skin you can't protect. If you only have three or four days, I'd usually suggest keeping this trip light and saving the scar work for a longer stay.

If you take or recently took isotretinoin or any other acne medication, photograph the labels and send them on WhatsApp with the date of your last dose, and ask whether that timing affects which week to book.

Say you land in Seoul on a Thursday night and fly home the following Wednesday, and you have both shallow, rolling scars on your cheeks and a few deeper, tethered ones. I would look at which scars pull down when you stretch the skin, because those usually need subcision first, while the shallow ones respond to fractional radiofrequency or laser on the surface.

Subcision can leave bruising, and the surface treatment leaves redness and a fine grid of marks, so I would want the session early in your stay rather than on your last day. That way most of the visible reaction settles while you are still here. If you have an important video call or event on your first day back, I would tell you that before we plan anything.

What can go wrong, and who should wait?

The common reactions are the ones in the timeline: redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, flaking, and bruising after subcision. Less often, a breakout flares in the treated area in the first week, or a cold sore reactivates around the mouth in people prone to them. Infection is uncommon but possible whenever the skin barrier is opened.

The one I watch for most in travelers is darkening after healing. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation is more common in darker skin types and can take months to fade, and fresh sun exposure on healing skin makes it more likely. Sightseeing in summer without sun protection is the classic way to end up with it.

People who heal slowly, have a history of keloids, have a weakened immune system, or are pregnant or breastfeeding should discuss it first or wait. The AAD also asks you to mention every acne treatment you've used in the past two years, since some combinations raise the risk of side effects.

Once you're home, redness and flaking that improve day by day are expected. Skin that becomes hot, swollen and more painful after the third day, yellow crusting, blisters, or a fever are reasons to see a doctor where you live promptly. The US CDC recommends that anyone traveling for medical care bring home copies of their records, so a local doctor can see what was done. Many of these after-effects also come up with lighter treatments, which I go through in the side effects of Korean glass skin treatments.

Results vary from person to person, and deep scars rarely disappear completely; the usual goal is scars that catch less light and less makeup.

If your skin tends to darken where spots or cuts have healed, send a photo of an old mark that's still visible on WhatsApp, and ask how that history should shape the timing of your sessions.

What decides the cost of acne scar treatment in Korea?

The method matters first: subcision, fractional radiofrequency and laser each take different time and materials, and many plans combine two of them. The number of sessions counts too, since scars are usually treated in several rounds rather than one. The area and depth of your scars set how much of the face needs work, and a few deep scars are a different job from scarring across both cheeks.

How many days you can stay in Seoul also shapes how sessions are spaced, as does the follow-up your skin needs between them. To get the figure for your case, send a daylight photo of your scars on WhatsApp and ask for it there.

Seeing me in Myeongdong

A structured consultation comes first, with an interpreter, and then I plan and perform the treatment one-to-one. English, Japanese and Chinese interpreters are in the clinic, and other languages can be arranged on request. Someone stays with you from consultation through treatment, which helps when we're talking through aftercare you'll be doing alone in a hotel room.

We're on the 3rd floor of Korea Daeyungak Tower, 97 Toegye-ro, a one-minute walk from Myeongdong Station Exit 5 on Line 4, and also close to Hoehyeon Station Exit 7, across from Shinsegae Department Store.

If you'd like something lighter for overall tone on the same trip, my overview of Korean skin treatments to book in Seoul covers what fits a short stay. Glass skin treatments work on glow and texture rather than scars, and what Korean glass skin treatment changes over time shows where their limits are.

Before you book flights, send one photo of your cheek in side light on WhatsApp, along with the question that would settle your dates: how many of your days in Seoul your skin is likely to look freshly treated. One photo is enough, and you can ask before booking anything. When you come in, I will examine your skin and recommend the combination that fits your scars and your schedule.

Questions people ask

Before you message us

Can I fly the day after acne scar treatment?

In most cases, yes. Flying with red or healing skin isn't a medical problem in itself. Cabin air is dry, so a plain moisturizer helps, and sunscreen matters if you sit by the window. The bigger question is appearance: fresh subcision bruising can be very visible for the first several days, so many people prefer some margin before the flight.

Is one session in Seoul enough for acne scars?

For most depressed scars, one session is a start. The American Academy of Dermatology describes microneedling plans for acne scars of three to five sessions spaced two to four weeks apart, and collagen rebuilds over months. One session shows how your skin responds; whether a course is worth planning around future trips is decided after that.

Does acne scar treatment hurt?

Numbing cream is commonly applied before fractional radiofrequency, and most people describe the treatment as heat and prickling. Subcision feels more like pressure under the skin. Afterwards the face can feel sunburned and tender for a day or two, and released areas may be sore to touch while bruises heal.

Can I treat scars while I still get breakouts?

Usually it's better not to. Dermatologists generally treat active acne first, because new inflamed spots keep creating new marks and inflamed skin heals less predictably. The AAD advises postponing scar treatment for painful or pus-filled pimples and after recent isotretinoin. Once breakouts are controlled, scar work has a steadier base.

Will the treatment leave dark marks on darker skin?

It can. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation is more common in darker skin types and may take months to fade. If your skin tends to darken after spots or cuts heal, say so at the consultation, because it shapes settings and timing.

Results and maintenance period vary by individual. Every procedure carries the possibility of side effects, which are explained before you agree to treatment.
