Post inflammatory erythema is the flat pink-to-red mark that stays on your cheek after the pimple itself is gone. It is not pigment and it is not a hole. The inflammation left the small blood vessels in that patch dilated, so the skin reads red in photos and flares after a hot shower or a glass of wine. People message me calling these marks scars, and the good news is that in most cases they are not.
At Muse Clinic Myeongdong the laser we use most often for red and brown acne marks is Laser Toning, from ₩29,000 (excl. 10% VAT) for a first-visit trial session. This guide explains how to tell post inflammatory erythema from a brown mark and from an atrophic scar, which options on our list I choose for each, and what a course realistically looks like.
What post inflammatory erythema actually is
A pimple is an inflamed pore. To deal with that inflammation the skin widens the capillaries around it and floods the area. When the spot heals, the capillaries do not always shrink back on schedule, and what you see is the flat red patch of post inflammatory erythema where the pimple used to be. Press it gently and the colour briefly pales, then returns.
That behaviour is the useful clue. Brown marks, called post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, are made of melanin and do not blanch. An atrophic scar is a structural dip and does not change colour under pressure. The three look similar in a phone mirror and need different treatments, which is why the consultation starts with a light and a fingertip rather than a device.
| What you see and feel | Most likely what it is | Direction we usually take |
|---|---|---|
| Flat pink or red patch, pales briefly when pressed, flares with heat | Post inflammatory erythema | A toning laser course plus strict sun protection, and control of any active acne |
| Flat brown or grey-brown mark, colour does not change under pressure | Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation | Laser toning sessions spaced 1–2 weeks apart |
| A dip you can feel with a fingertip, colour close to normal | Atrophic scar | Potenza or Pico Focus, decided at the consultation |
| Rough, uneven surface and visible pores, no obvious colour change | Textured skin | See our separate note on textured skin |
What makes post inflammatory erythema last longer than it should
Most red marks are on their way out by themselves. The things that keep them parked are predictable, and I go through this list before I discuss any laser, because a course of sessions cannot outrun daily UV exposure and picking.
- New spots forming in the same place, so the area never gets an inflammation-free month.
- Squeezing and picking, which restarts the inflammation and can turn a flat mark into a real scar.
- Sun exposure without sunscreen — the single habit I ask visitors to fix first.
- Aggressive home peels or scrubs used on already inflamed skin.
- Heat and friction: long hot showers, saunas, resting a phone against the cheek.
Laser options we use for red acne marks at Muse
Laser Toning — the starting point for flat marks
Our Laser Toning list is written for pigmentation, freckles, blemishes and, in its own words, red or brown marks left by acne. The list carries both a Q-switched option and an Nd:YAG option, and the doctor picks based on what your marks are made of. A session runs about 20 to 30 minutes and our notes say you can return to normal activity right away.
When I would choose this: flat post inflammatory erythema, no dips, acne currently quiet, and a patient who can commit to repeat sessions every one to two weeks. Our own guidance for pigment-type marks is that improvement generally shows after around ten sessions, so I say that upfront rather than letting someone expect a single visit to clear a year of marks.
Cynergy Genesis Laser — when texture is part of the problem
Cynergy Genesis Laser is the setting with a warm, thermal feel. Compared with dual toning it puts out more energy over a longer irradiation, which our list ties to collagen regeneration as well as tone. The session is 20 to 30 minutes and finishes with a short mummy facial and sunblock.
When I would choose this: the red marks come with enlarged pores, dull tone and a slightly rough surface, so tone and texture are worth treating in the same visit. It is also the one I suggest for people who want fewer, denser sessions instead of a long light-touch course.
Capri Laser — when the acne itself is still going
There is no point chasing old red marks while new spots keep arriving. Capri Laser targets the sebaceous glands behind the acne and applies to several acne types, with a first-visit stamping option from ₩69,000 excl. VAT that includes a modeling mask. Several packages on the list bundle a one-week acne prescription (medication is paid separately at the pharmacy).
When I would choose this: active inflamed spots on the face today. We settle the acne first, then start the toning course on whatever post inflammatory erythema remains. Skipping this order is the most expensive mistake I see.

What moves your final number is simple: whether we treat a part of the face or the full face, how many sessions you buy in one go (the multi-session lists cost less per session), and whether active acne needs handling first. Nothing about being a foreign patient changes the price.
What a session and the following weeks look like
Here is the honest sequence I describe at consultations, using only what our own lists say about intervals and recovery. Results and how long they last vary from person to person, and skin that reddens easily often needs a gentler setting and more patience.
| When | What tends to happen |
|---|---|
| Day 0 | Cleanse, laser pass, a short facial and sunblock. Mild warmth and flushing for a few hours; our list notes daily activity is possible right away. |
| Days 1–7 | Marks usually look much the same. Sunscreen every morning matters more than any cream at this stage. |
| Weeks 1–2 | Interval for the next session. Our guidance is to repeat at one- to two-week spacing rather than crowding sessions together. |
| Around session 10 | Our own notes put visible tone and pigment improvement at roughly ten sessions for marks of this type. |
Your visit, step by step
- 01Arrive at reception on the 3rd floor; an interpreter meets you and stays with you.
- 02Structured consultation: the marks are examined under a lamp, checked by touch, and sorted into red, brown and indented.
- 03The head doctor confirms the plan and the device setting, and explains what one session can and cannot do.
- 04You wash your face at the clinic, then the laser pass is performed — about 20 to 30 minutes for a toning session.
- 05A short soothing step and sunblock, then aftercare instructions in English before you leave.

Aftercare that decides half the result
If you already use a prescription acne routine at home, bring the details or a photo of the packaging. It changes which setting is safe and how soon we can repeat, and it is faster than reconstructing it from memory through an interpreter.
Risks, and what these lasers will not do
Laser toning is a routine outpatient treatment, but every procedure carries the possibility of side effects and you should hear them before you agree. Our own notes say surface crusting is unlikely with toning because it works at deeper pigment, though skin can look flushed for a few hours and feel warm.
- Temporary redness, warmth or mild swelling on the day of treatment.
- Rare irritation or a small crust, more likely if you use strong actives right before a session.
- Marks that respond slowly or unevenly — darker and easily reddened skin types often need gentler settings and more sessions.
- No change in depressions: a toning laser treats colour, not the floor of an atrophic scar.
- New acne can create new marks, which is why active spots are treated first.
I also tell people what I cannot promise. A course can make post inflammatory erythema less noticeable in photographs and even out overall tone; it cannot undo a deep scar, and it cannot stop marks forming again if the acne keeps returning. That decision — what is treatable now and what should wait — belongs to the doctor at the consultation, not to a price list.
Why visitors bring acne marks to Muse Clinic Myeongdong
One price list. The same options and the same numbers a Korean patient sees, published in full on the website, with 10% VAT stated separately. Interpreters on site in English, Japanese and Chinese, with other languages arranged on request, staying with you from consultation through treatment. The head doctor plans and performs the treatment one to one after the consultation — you can read Dr. Sarang Lim's background before you come.
Practical details for a trip: we are a one-minute walk from Myeongdong Station Exit 5 on Line 4, also close to Hoehyeon Station Exit 7 across from Shinsegae Department Store, on the 3rd floor of the building with a Twosome Place café and Hana Bank at street level. Hours are Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00 and Saturday to Sunday 09:00–15:00, so a weekend session between shopping is realistic. Parking in the same building is ₩1,000 per 10 minutes.
If your concern is more about surface roughness than colour, start with our textured skin guide. If it is the lower face line rather than the skin, the note on jowls and what actually lifts them is the more useful read — different problem, different tool.
Questions people ask
Before you message us
What is post inflammatory erythema?
Post inflammatory erythema is the flat pink or red mark left behind after a pimple settles. The spot is not pigment and not a scar; the blood vessels in that patch of skin stayed dilated after the inflammation. Because the surface is level, you can feel nothing with a fingertip, and the colour usually looks worse after heat, exercise or alcohol. Fading is gradual and varies from person to person.
How long does post inflammatory erythema take to fade on its own?
Many red marks fade slowly over weeks to months without anything done to them, as long as the acne in that spot stays quiet and the area is kept out of the sun. What stalls them is new inflammation in the same place, picking, and daily UV exposure. If the marks have sat unchanged for months, that is usually when people come in and ask about laser sessions instead of waiting.
Can laser treatment help post inflammatory erythema?
Laser sessions are the main in-clinic option we use for red and brown acne marks, and our toning list is written for exactly that concern. It is a course, not one visit: our guidance is to space sessions one to two weeks apart, and for pigment-type marks our own notes say visible improvement generally appears after around ten sessions. Results and how long they last vary from person to person.
Is my mark post inflammatory erythema or an atrophic scar?
Run a clean fingertip over it in good light. Post inflammatory erythema is flat and coloured; an atrophic scar is a dip you can feel, and the colour may be normal. Colour responds to toning lasers, while a depression needs a tool that rebuilds the floor of the scar, such as Potenza or Pico Focus. Many faces have both, so the doctor maps them separately at the consultation.
How much does post inflammatory erythema treatment cost in Seoul?
At Muse Clinic Myeongdong the Laser Toning list starts from ₩29,000 (excl. 10% VAT) for a first-visit trial session with a modeling mask, and the Cynergy Genesis Laser list starts at a higher level for the longer regeneration setting. If the acne is still active, the Capri Laser list starts from ₩69,000 excl. VAT. Every number is the same list a Korean patient sees, and all current options are published on our treatments page.
Can I start post inflammatory erythema treatment on a short trip to Seoul?
Yes, one session fits easily into a trip. Our toning treatment takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes and our list notes that you can return to daily activity right away, so people book it between shopping in Myeongdong. A single session will not clear months-old marks, so I usually plan the first session here and explain what to do at home until you can repeat it.
Results and maintenance period vary by individual. Every procedure carries the possibility of side effects, which are explained before you agree to treatment. Prices exclude 10% VAT and event prices may change. This article is general information from the clinic and is not a diagnosis; suitability is decided at the consultation.
